2004 - Bandleader Al Dvorin, who coined the phrase "Elvis has left he building," dies in a car accident near Ivanpah, California, at age 82.

2001 - Stevie Nicks postponed two concerts to undergo treatment for severe bronchitis. 

1998 -  Mark David Chapman said that he did not want any of the money that would be made from the sale of the signed "Double Fantasy" album that John Lennon signed for him the same day he was killed. 

1998 - Jim Carrey joins Elton John on stage at a show in Anaheim, California, where the pair duet on "Rocket Man."

1987 - Bon Jovi headlined the Mosters of Rock festival at Castle Donington, England. 

1986 - Stand By Me is released in theaters.

1970 - Derek and the Dominoes begin recording their famous album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. 

1969 - The Beatles participate in their final photo shoot at John Lennon's home at Tittenhurst Park in Sunninghill, England. Photos from the session are used on the front and back covers of their Hey Jude compilation album.

1968 - Cynthia Powell Lennon sued John Lennon for divorce on the grounds of adultery. 

1968 - The Beatles begin recording "Back In The U.S.S.R."

1967 - Layne Staley of Alice In Chains is born in Washington State.

1958 - Vernon Reid is born in London. 

1917 - Bluesman John Lee Hooker is born in Coahoma County, Mississippi.

1906 - The Victor Talking Machine Company introduces the first "internal horn" record player, the first practical unit for home use. It sells for $200 (about $4000 adjusted for inflation).
