1996 - The Beatles Anthology video set released by Capitol Records.

1992 - John Mellencamp marries a supermodel Elaine Irwin.

1991 - Guitarist C.C. DeVille is kicked out of Poison after he sabotages their performance at the MTV Video Music Awards by playing "Talk Dirty To Me" instead of "Unskinny Bop" as planned.

1989 - Soundgarden release Louder Than Love.

1987 - The US Rock 'n' Roll TV show American Bandstand was officially cancelled after 30 years on ABC-TV. 

1986 - Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" won the MTV award for Best Video. 

1981 - Stevie Nick's solo LP, "Bella Donna", reached the top of Billboard's album chart with the help of a pair of duet singles, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" with Tom Petty and "Leather and Lace" with Eagles' drummer, Don Henley. 

1976 - Garry Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd falls asleep at the wheel of his new Ford Torino and hits a tree and a house. The incident inspires their song "That Smell."

1969 - Rock guitarist Dweezil Zappa is born Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa in Los Angeles, California.

1968 - John Lennon flies to Germany for his role in the movie How I Won the War - the only major non-documentary film in which he would ever appear. His character wears glasses that he would use as the basis for his distinctive eyewear.

1967 - The Beatles record "I Am The Walrus."

1966 - The Rolling Stones fly to Los Angeles to record "Get Off My Cloud". 

1964 - The Animals had their only number one hit on Billboard's Hot 100 when "House of the Rising Sun" reached the top. 

1962 - The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, visits producer George Martin's London office to listen to the acetate of the group's first recording, "Love Me Do."

1946 - Rock drummer Buddy Miles (of The Electric Flag and Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys) is born George Allen Miles Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska. His grandmother calls him "Buddy" after jazz drummer Buddy Rich.

1946 - Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is born as Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar.
