1999 - Paul McCartney returns to play the Cavern Club in Liverpool for the first time since 1963.

1980 - At Yoko Ono's request, a 10-minute worldwide silent vigil takes place at 2:00 p.m. EST for John Lennon, who was shot and killed six days earlier.

1978 - Billy Joel plays Madison Square Garden for the first time, which growing up he considered a "temple." He later becomes the first musical act to hold residency at the Garden.

1977 - Saturday Night Fever opens in theaters.

1974 - Styx release "Lady," and peaked at #6.

1972 - Alexander's department store in New York stayed open late so Alice Cooper could do his Christmas shopping. 

1971 - Radical John Sinclair, who was arrested for marijuana possession in 1969 and given a 10-year prison sentence, is released from prison thanks to high-profile supporters such as John Lennon.

1970 - John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" is certified gold.

1959 - The Ohio State University Research Center issues a report showing that rock and roll is the overwhelming favorite music of people aged 14-18. However, most over the age of eighteen who were polled considered it their least favorite form of music.

1949 - Cliff Williams (bassist for AC/DC) is born in Romford, Essex, England.
