Even though fall is right around the corner, this is the time of year when millions of Americans start planning their holiday trips. Many travelers look forward to shredding the slopes at ski resorts, checking out local festivities, or just escaping the cold by visiting tropical destinations.

To help with the search, U.S. News & World Report refreshed its list of the best places to take a winter vacation. Analysts determined these rankings based on "based on expert analysis and reader votes, considering weather, crowds, seasonal events, and other factors." Scenic destinations in Vietnam, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, Thailand, and much more earned spots on the list.

One Colorado town was featured on the star-studded roundup: Breckenridge! Here's why writers are showing this spot some love:

"This quaint Colorado town swells with outdoor enthusiasts in winter. Skiers and snowboarders will find plenty of powder at Breckenridge Ski Resort, one of the best in Colorado. For those who are not interested in skiing or snowboarding, Breckenridge offers opportunities to try other snowy sports like winter hiking and fat biking. Visitors seeking less active pursuits can check out Breckenridge's International Snow Sculpture Championships (in January), go sledding at Carter Park or browse the shops on Main Street. If you plan to drive from Denver, try to arrive and depart on weekdays to avoid heavy weekend traffic."
