Could eBikes Soon Do 5 Tons on One Charge?

Lighting Motorcycles was started by Richard Hatfield back in 2006. He built the company to push the edge of motorsports technology, and that revolutionary technology was powered by electricity. By 2013, Lighting Motorcycles had won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with their Lighting bike. But now that this company has proven it’s bike can move faster than all the others, Hatfield and the gang have turned their focus on a new goal…

Can You Do 5 Tons on One Charge?

Electric motorcycles are notorious for having excellent performance: throttle output is adjustable, horsepower is decent, and all the motor’s torque is instantly available. You would be hard pressed to find a gas-powered bike that could do all of these things, but there is one thing gas-powered bikes do better than eBikes—they have range.

Some of the best electric motorcycles still only have a range just over 100 miles, but their gas-powered counterparts can travel up to 320 miles on a single tank. This is often the reason why many motorcyclists refuse to buy an electric bike, but that could soon change.

Richard Hatfield has promised to make an electric motorcycle that will make the trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles on one charge. That’s a 500-mile trip! Hatfield and Lightning Motorcycles won’t pull this feat off alone though. Hatfield has enlisted the help of David Roberts at the Battery Innovation Center in Indiana. The center helps develop small high capacity batteries for consumer use, and using the center’s connections, Hatfield hopes to make his vision of a 500-mile ride on one charge a reality.

Do you think they will pull it off? Would making an eBike with the range of 500 miles tempt you to buy one? Your motorcycling attorneys will keep an eye on this one, so check back with us on Twitter and Facebook for more updates.
