Safety is an important issue to every motorcyclist out on the road. That’s because motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users since they don’t have a cab for protection. However, manufacturers are trying to find new ways to increase safety for every rider on the road. Check out the new technologies you may soon find on your next motorcycle.
New Motorcycle Safety Technology
- Radar – Many cars on the road today use small radar sensors to help with automatic braking and rear collision detection. Now, these innovations could be heading to motorcycles. Ducati is already testing a forward and rear miniature radar unit for its bikes. These systems will make a sound if a dangerous situation is imminent and/or light up your rear-view mirrors as a warning.
- Semi-Autonomous Features – Tesla has its autopilot system, and a similar function could soon find its way to KTM motorcycles. The Austrian factory (and a few others) are working on adaptive cruise control, which could allow a bike to control its own throttle. This feature has possible applications when it comes to convenience, but it also bears an unexpected safety bonus. This system could also introduce collision detection and automatic braking to your motorcycle.
- Vehicle to Vehicle Communication – Audi and Ducati are working together to develop Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology (C-V2X). This tech uses 5G cellular bands to communicate with other vehicles on the road and avoid crashes. That means a car could detect a motorcycle and activate safety measures even if a driver doesn’t see the motorcyclist. Audi and Ducati demonstrated the system on July 12th, but there’s still a lot of work to be done on it.
